Online Ordering for Mexican Restaurants: The Complete Guide

Interior of a Mexican restaurant with a counter and menu board

Online ordering stopped being optional somewhere around 2020, and the way customers use it has kept changing since. This guide covers what actually matters for a Mexican restaurant: which channels to run, how to structure a taquería menu online, and how to keep mobile checkout from leaking orders.

Why online ordering is essential for taquerías

Three things change the moment orders arrive digitally instead of over the counter or the phone.

  • Bigger tickets. People add the horchata, the elote, and the churros when nobody is waiting behind them in line. Digital tickets routinely run 15–25% higher than phone orders.
  • Fewer mistakes. No mis-heard "sin cebolla," no illegible tickets, no calling back to confirm an address.
  • Your phone stops ringing during the rush. That alone is worth the setup for most kitchens.

There is also a demand-side reality: for a large share of diners, the ordering flow is the restaurant's first impression. A clean, fast, photo-rich menu makes a two-table taquería look like a professional operation.

Your three options: marketplace, your own site, or hybrid

Option 1 — Third-party marketplaces

DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub bring their own hungry audience and handle delivery logistics. In exchange they take 15–30% of every order and keep the customer relationship.

  • Best at: discovery, delivery drivers, reaching people who have never heard of you.
  • Worst at: margin, repeat business, brand, and data.

Option 2 — Your own ordering website

A branded site on your own domain where customers order directly. You pay a platform fee and card processing instead of commission, and every phone number and email is yours.

  • Best at: margin, repeat customers, promotions, loyalty, brand.
  • Worst at: cold discovery — nobody browses your website looking for dinner unless you point them there.

Option 3 — Hybrid (what most successful taquerías do)

Stay on one or two marketplaces to catch new customers, and run your own site as the channel you actively promote. Treat marketplace commission as an advertising budget, then work to convert those customers to direct.

How to choose the right platform

Ignore feature lists for a moment and ask six questions:

  1. 1What is the total cost at my real volume? Add platform fee, processing, and any per-order charges, then divide by monthly sales.
  2. 2Do I own the customer list, and can I export it?
  3. 3Does it handle a taquería menu properly — per-protein pricing, tortilla choice, salsa heat levels, combos, family packs?
  4. 4Is it bilingual for both my customers and my staff?
  5. 5Can I change a price or mark carnitas sold out from my phone in under a minute?
  6. 6When something breaks at 7 PM on a Friday, who answers?

That third question eliminates most generic platforms, which is exactly why we built Tacoter around Mexican menu structure — more on that in Built for Mexican Restaurants.

Setting up your digital menu

A digital menu is not a PDF of your paper menu. Structure it the way people order.

  1. 1Start with categories customers scan for: Tacos, Burritos, Tortas, Platillos, Mariscos, Bebidas, Postres.
  2. 2Put your best sellers at the top of each category. Order matters more than most owners expect.
  3. 3Price by protein where it varies — al pastor, asada, birria, lengua, pescado — instead of hiding it in a note.
  4. 4Turn every real-world question into a modifier: corn or flour, single or double tortilla, salsa heat, extra queso, sin cebolla.
  5. 5Write descriptions that sell. Tacoter's AI Menu Description Generator writes English and Spanish versions at once.
  6. 6Give every item a photo. Items with photos get ordered noticeably more often; if you don't have photography, AI-generated food images close the gap.

If typing a 60-item menu sounds like a lost weekend, don't. Photograph the paper menu and let the AI Menu Scanner build the first draft, then fix what it got wrong. Ongoing edits are covered in Easy Menu Management.

Optimizing for mobile orders

Assume nearly every order comes from a phone, often one-handed, often on a slow connection in a parking lot.

  • Menu visible without a login. Forcing account creation before browsing is the single biggest killer of first orders.
  • Guest checkout always available; offer the account after the order, not before.
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay — they remove the worst step in mobile checkout, typing a card number.
  • Thumb-sized buttons and no pinch-zoom.
  • Fast images. Compressed, lazy-loaded, and never a 4 MB photo of a taco.
  • A visible pickup time and a live order status page so nobody calls to ask if it's ready.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Prices that don't match your counter prices. Pick a policy and keep both in sync.
  • No sold-out toggle. Nothing burns goodwill faster than paying for birria that ran out at noon.
  • Ignoring the customer list you're building. A 500-person SMS list is worth more than most paid advertising.
  • Leaving prep time at a default. If you say 15 minutes and it takes 40, you own the bad review.
  • English-only checkout in a bilingual neighborhood — see English & Spanish.
  • No plan to convert marketplace customers to direct. Insert a card in every bag.
